FINDING YOUR WAY:
THE NORTH PEDWAY PATH FROM THE NEW EASTSIDE REVEALED

In this second part of our Chicago Pedway series, we delve into the northern section of the underground walkway system, accompanied by a comprehensive video guide showcasing the entire route. Our journey includes prominent landmarks such as Swissotel, 303 Wacker Dr, the Hyatt Regency, Illinois Center at 111 E Wacker Dr, 233 N Michigan Ave, and the South Metra Station. Along the way, we pass by essential services like the UPS store, FedEx, various lunch spots, and CVS, offering convenience and practicality for pedestrians.
The Chicago Pedway, known for its underground walkways connecting hotels, apartment buildings, bus and train stations, civic buildings, and downtown businesses, can be likened to a three-story concrete maze of pedestrian confusion. Despite some well-lit areas with helpful signage and cheerful decorations, others are dim and deserted, contributing to the challenge of navigating this tunnel system.

A Brief Chicago Pedway History

Initially built in 1951 to enhance pedestrian safety by connecting the Red Line to the Blue Line at Washington and Jackson Boulevard, the Chicago Pedway has since expanded with public and private funds to link over 50 buildings. This expansion has undoubtedly provided safe and convenient pedestrian travel, but the involvement of multiple entities in its development has led to a loss of design continuity. Inconsistent signage, locked doors, and confusing escalator routes are common pitfalls for pedestrians navigating the Pedway.

The New Eastside

The Lakeshore East micro-neighborhood, with its 6-acre park and attractive amenities like fountains, playgrounds, and walking trails, has become a sought-after urban area for both single adults and families. Boasting a vertical three-level landscape that optimizes space usage, this area continues to attract businesses and retail outlets due to its growing popularity and accessibility.

Accessing the Chicago Pedway from The New Eastside

Accessing the Pedway from the New Eastside is facilitated by a new entry point established when the Aqua Tower was constructed in 2009. This entry connects three hotels in the Lakeshore East micro-neighborhood - the Aqua Tower, the Hyatt Regency, and the Heritage at Millennium Park. The Pedway in this area offers a cleaner, carpeted environment popular among young families.

Points of Interest along the North and South Branches of the Chicago Pedway

Navigating towards the North Branch of the Pedway leads pedestrians to a variety of dining options at 111 E. Wacker. On the other hand, exploring the South Branch promises abundant shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities, including a Macy's department store and Block Thirty Seven, a multi-level indoor mall and movie theater.

Join us as we uncover the intricacies of the Chicago Pedway's northern section, revealing the hidden gems and practical insights that make traversing this underground network an engaging and convenient experience for all.
