NorthShore Exchange: A Unique Luxury Consignment Experience in Chicago

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Mia, the store manager of North Shore Exchange (NSE), a unique luxury consignment store located on the 4th floor at 900 N Michigan. NSE is not your average consignment shop; it operates on a consignment model with a charitable twist, where all profits go to charity.

Mia shared with me NSE's mission to provide a platform for consigners in the Chicagoland area to sell their gently used luxury items, while simultaneously supporting local charities. They accept a wide range of luxury brands typically found in high-end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, as long as the items are less than five years old. In addition to clothing and accessories, NSE also accepts home and furniture items in excellent resale condition, but these require pre-approval before consignment or donation.

One of the highlights of NSE is its impressive selection of luxury handbags from renowned brands such as Hermès, Chanel, and YSL. The store operates on a consignment basis, with the percentage the consigner receives increasing in proportion to the value of the item. NSE also offers a diverse collection of fine jewelry and costume jewelry.

Beyond its commitment to luxury consignment, NSE stands out for its volunteer-based model. The store is staffed by a dedicated group of mature women, many of whom have relocated from the suburbs to downtown Chicago. These volunteers have formed deep friendships and created a strong network within their community. Volunteering at NSE has become a fulfilling way for them to give back and be a part of something meaningful.

Mia emphasized the store's philosophy of sustainability and "Pay it Forward." Consigners are paid within 30 days, ensuring a prompt and reliable process. Additionally, NSE hosts two private events annually, where they showcase their most sought-after high-end merchandise and offer exclusive access to their VIP customers.

I also had the opportunity to speak with Sonia Koht, a resident of LakeShore East and a dedicated volunteer at NSE for over five years. Sonia shared her positive experiences and the store's loyal customer base. Many customers, including those from out of town, make repeat visits to NSE, drawn by the unique luxury items and affordable prices. Sonia described the shopping experience as a "little treasure hunt," where customers can discover hidden gems at exceptional value.

What truly sets NSE apart is its philanthropic mission. Since 2013, the store has donated over $3,700,000 in grants to deserving charities in the Chicagoland region. These grants address critical needs such as abuse, hunger, homelessness, and mental health. By shopping, consigning, or donating at NSE, customers and consigners alike become part of a larger movement to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
