DID YOU KNOW PARIS IS JUST A STROLL AWAY?

We all appreciate the vibrant community of New Eastside, surrounded by Chicago's world-class attractions like the Riverwalk, Lakefront, Magnificent Mile, parks, theatres, and cultural events. But did you know that Paris is just a stroll away, with an array of Parisian influences woven into the fabric surrounding our neighborhood? From Lea Parisian Sandwiches to the Paris Baquette, and even the architectural nods to the Paris Metro at the Van Buren METRA station, the French essence beautifully integrates with our cityscape, creating a delightful fusion of cultures right in the heart of downtown Chicago.

Parisian food to savor just steps away!

Umami from Scratch Catering: While Umami from Scratch (UFS) doesn't have a physical storefront, Divyasha, a resident of the area, brings her culinary expertise to the heart of New Eastside through her microbakery. The owner, Nicolas, , brings a piece of Paris to Chicago with flavorful baguette sandwiches, fresh salads, artisan bread, and pastries that evoke the charm of Parisian street cafes. The decor, collected on trips to Paris, adds an authentic touch to the experience, making it a must-visit for those craving a taste of France.
Venteux, a chic café, oyster bar, and brasserie located just steps from the New Eastside on Michigan Avenue. Immerse yourself in the romantic ambiance of this intimate space adorned with whimsical colors and lush botanical murals, offering a delightful fusion of classic French dishes with a contemporary twist. Indulge in dishes like the delectable Palermo and savor the happiness that fills the air within this beautiful café.
Paris Baguette: Across the river on Illinois Street, Paris Baguette promises a delightful culinary experience featuring popular French baked goods. While it's a Korean chain, the pastries, croissants, and savory sandwiches like the salami & roasted tomato melt showcase French-inspired flavors that will transport you to the streets of Paris.
It's not just about the food, though; Chicago's deep-seated Parisian connection is evident in its design, echoing the French influence on our city's planning.

The Parisian Influence on Michigan Avenue

One of the most striking examples of Parisian influence in Chicago is Michigan Avenue, often referred to as the "Magnificent Mile." Inspired by the grandeur of the Champs-Élysées in Paris, Michigan Avenue was transformed in the early 20th century into a wide, tree-lined boulevard with elegant Beaux-Arts architecture. This transformation was largely the work of Daniel Burnham, a visionary architect who was inspired by the transformative works of Baron Haussmann in Paris. Burnham's vision for Michigan Avenue included wide sidewalks, public art, and a commitment to beautification, all of which contribute to the Parisian feel of this iconic Chicago street.

The Buckingham Fountain

Another notable example of Parisian influence in Chicago is the Buckingham Fountain, located in Grant Park just a short walk from the New Eastside neighborhood. Inspired by the Latona Fountain at Versailles, the Buckingham Fountain is a magnificent work of art that features intricate carvings, cascading waterfalls, and a central sculpture of a woman surrounded by cherubs. Designed by Edward H. Bennett in collaboration with French artists, the Buckingham Fountain is a testament to the shared artistic heritage between Chicago and Paris.

The Van Buren METRA Station

The Van Buren METRA station is another nod to Parisian architecture. The entrance to the station is designed to resemble the Paris Metro, complete with its distinctive Art Nouveau-style canopy and ornate ironwork. This playful illusion transports commuters and visitors alike to the heart of Paris, creating a sense of connection between the two cities.
So next time you take a stroll around the New Eastside, remember to savor these Parisian influences. They enrich our urban tapestry, inviting us to experience the worldliness that thrives within the heart of Chicago. Whether you're indulging in a croissant from Lea Parisian Sandwiches, admiring the elegant design of Buckingham Fountain, or simply wandering down Michigan Avenue, you're part of a beautiful, historical mosaic that celebrates the lasting bond between two remarkable cities.
